Why Cockroaches In Your Aiken Home Are More Dangerous Than You May Think

Known in parts of the South as “palmetto bugs,” cockroaches go by many names but they are a universally known problem to have inside homes. They bring disease, squalor and all-around grossness with them. So it pays to take the necessary steps to keep your home roach-free.

Cockroaches In South Carolina

Knowing your enemy is the first step in beating them. South Carolina has four common types of cockroaches:

  • American cockroach: The largest home-invading roach variety, these brown-colored pests have wings that extend beyond their bodies. With six legs and a pair of antennae, these are distinguishable by the “figure-8” shape found on the tops of their heads.
  • German cockroach: The most common variety in the world, the German cockroach is a bit smaller than its American cousin, but they are just as horrible to have around. They are dark brown with two dark dash marks right behind their heads.
  • Oriental cockroach: Typically darker in color, these roaches don’t have flight capabilities but still have small, underdeveloped wings. They can grow quite large, sometimes as big as American cockroaches.
  • Brown-banded cockroach: A much smaller variety of cockroach, these winged bugs are identifiable by the several brown rings found along their bodies.

Dangers Of A Roach Infestation

No matter which type of cockroach has invaded your South Carolina home, they all bring a host of problems. They are squalor pests, hanging out in sewers and dumpsters in search of food. Their hairy bodies allow germs and bacteria of all kinds to stick to their bodies, tracking them wherever they go. Cockroach infestations are known to cause the following problems:

  • Disease and illness: As they spread germs throughout your residence, roaches can transmit some nasty illnesses. Cockroaches of all kinds have been known to carry plague and salmonella as well as parasites.
  • Allergies: Roach bodies carry dust and dander around, and for people with allergy sensitivities or who are prone to serious reactions, the mere presence of cockroaches can be a big problem.
  • Odors: Cockroaches leave behind droppings, skin particles, and rotting egg sacs, all of which can cause unpleasant, musty odors. This is especially a problem when cockroaches nest inside walls or ventilation shafts.

What Attracts Cockroaches And What You Can Do

Cockroaches are in constant search of areas with easy access to food, water, and shelter. Knowing what attracts them helps you know why it’s important to address all of the following areas:

  • Food storage: Roaches need to eat, so they will seize the opportunity to root around in dumpsters or inside pantries for even the smallest traces of food. Not only do you need to keep your home clear of crumbs and spills, but proper food storage and disposal are a must.
  • Moisture control: Roaches like dark, moist places, so crawlspaces, attics and vent systems are ideal nesting grounds for them. Proper maintenance of plumbing, adequate fans to prevent moisture buildup, and regular inspections are all important.
  • Exterior access: Roaches can flatten their bodies to squeeze into impossibly small spaces. In other words, no crack or hole is too small. So sealing all gaps and cracks is important for keeping them out.
