BED BUG IDENTIFICATION

(Cimex lectularius)

Bed bugs have become a major threat for residential and commercial property owners in South Carolina. These pests were nearly eradicated by widespread use of DDT but have been making a comeback in recent years. Entomologists speculate that the return of bed bugs may be due to increased international and domestic  travel, lack of public awareness, the ban on DDT, and a higher resistance to currently used pesticides.

What do bed bugs look like?

Adult bed bugs are small, flat, and oval-shaped. They are brown in color but will turn reddish after a blood meal.

  • Bed bugs are nocturnal pests that come out to feed on blood.
  • During the day, bed bugs hide out on and in mattresses including around buttons and seams. They can also be found in furniture cracks and crevices, on upholstered furniture and behind wall hangings among other places.
  • Bed bug infests residential dwellings, hotels, hospitals and school dorms. In reality bed bugs tend to show up wherever people congregate.

Are bed bugs dangerous?

Bed bugs do bite but do not spread disease. Reaction to bed bug bites varies; some individuals don’t realize they’ve been bit while others notice small bites on their skin.
